Letting your pet tank
Hi, got the game 1 week ago, just passed pre-searing and been enjoying it so far. My R/W is now lvl 7 focus mindly on marksmanship. I wanna ask if theres an effective way to have your pet draw a foe's attention on a pull, assuming a single pull, while you can shoot it from far away. I tried to use a starter bow which doesn't cause as much damage and hit Esc right after the pull, my pet would go in but the foe still ended up coming to attack me. Sometimes it will attack my pet instead but it doesn't happen very often. I did look over the forum and but no luck finding an answer, hope someone can give me a pointer on how to get it done. Oh, i still use the same pet from pre-searing pet quest. and its same lvl as me.

Hi, welcome to the forum. There are several ways to "pull." For your purpose, however, I think it would be better to send your pet in by itself, so the monsters don't "see" you. To do this, stand outside monster's aggro range, and call the target you want your pet to attack, but step back immediately to stop yourself from auto-attacking. Your pet should charge forward after a second or so, by himself. Once all the enemies are attacking your pet, you can fire at will, and they will probably not attack you, as long as you use a Longbow/Flatbow to attack outside of their visual range. If for some reason the enemies come to you, just run circles around your pet until they attack your pet again. This is theory, by the way, I am basing my suggestion on the fact that a pet will attack a called target in this fashion, but it should work.
Also, check out this link for the best pet guide on the Net:

sadly, that doesn't work. The pet won't actually charge in to attack until you've landed a blow. And by that time, they monsters see you and swarm. A better trick that I'm perfecting right now is a passive pull (getting the monsters into your aggro ring so they see you without attacking them), leting them charge in, then circling the pet to make the monsters attack it instead of you. It's tricky to pull off, and they usually won't stick to the pet. That, and even with Shielding Hands + Call of Protection + Life Bond, you're still going to need a healer to keep the pet alive for more than a second, and most healers won't even look at a pet, let alone heal it. Comfort Animal and Predator's Pounce can help with the health loss, but it probably won't be enough if the pet is a solid tank.
However, pets can be great companions if you treat them well and use them correctly (which are both very challenging). All I can say is practice a lot, and the pet guide is your bible. Beyond that, just remember to have fun.

If an enemy steps inside your aggro bubble, there will almost always be a possibility that he will attack you. I've actually never tried using escape to send out the pet, but it soulds like a good idea. I would think though, if you could send out your pet far enough to where he contacts the enemy outside of your aggro bubble, he would attack your pet only. I can't say for sure if this will work, but it seems like in theory it should...

Letting your pet tank is easy:
1. Put high BeastMastery level (16 MB preffered)
2. Bring Pet attacks and defensive shouts
3. Bring one running skill with low recharge (sprint is my favorite)
4. Find a group of the mob (max. 5 mob - holding agro on more that 5 mob is very hard)
5. Send out the pet to attack
6. Use Sprint when the mob targets you - he will target your pet
7. Don't stay too close to the mob, but don't run too far either. In other words: keep as far as possible from the mob (use longbow with low marksmanship), but keep attacking with your low damage bow - so the pet continues keeping the agro/killing your ennemies.
You will probably use Comfort Animal a lot - so 14 expertise, 16 beast mastery is the best setup.

You are right, this is frustrating, then, because this DOES work on the Isle of the Nameless targets. Wasn't this area supposed to be a tutorial? As long as you cancel your attack animation, your pet runs in ahead of you, and attacks a called target before you fire. However, try that on an actual foe, and my wolf just paces back and forth, and howls, totally ignoring his training! My pet has been off my skillbar since about the Northern Wall mission, and won't join me again(outside of Tombs)until an AI update.

Ok, I guess I will post here. Since I know if I make a new thread people will just say "use the search fuction"!
I can make my pet tank with out problem with Life Bond, Call of Protection, Oytuphs Cry, Pred Pounce and Comfort Animal. I know that 6 giffons can't touch him, unfortunately, they can rip me limb from limb. I have read posts about people who can keep pet agro and kite quite well, I don't know if they are just that good or lying but I suck. If any one knows a reliable way to control pet agro in a solo environment give me some pointers.

It's called sprint/dodge or whatever running stance (low recharge). You just need to run 1 second and mob will target your pet.

Even without a running stance aggro can be kept on the pet, and there are a couple of tricks that work wonderfully but may be a bit difficult to discover unless someone tells you about them.
The first is that unless you're still attacking when your first arrow lands on the enemy, your pet will not attack it. This means you can't begin your kiting until after your first arrow has landed and your pet has run forward.
The second trick is to run about making enemies who want to chase you constantly having to try to move around your pet (in other words making a royal pain for them) while not allowing your pet to stop attacking and follow you.
This means you need to attack at least once every 6 seconds or so, as that's about how often your pet checks to see what enemy it should be on. If you haven't attacked for that length of time the pet will break off of the enemy its on and follow you. (I've never timed it exactly, but you can watch to get a feel for how often you'll need to attack to keep your pet enganged).
The last, and most obscure, trick is that there seems to be a bug surrounding Otyugh's Cry which makes enemies more inclined to attack your pet rather than you. I can't begin to explain why this would make any difference, but I've done enough soloing with the pet to tell you that for whatever reason it does.
